Fungal infections of the skin and nails are one of the most common reasons for a visit to a dermatologist, but also the reason why patients avoid wearing light summer shoes and summer is really close. Dermatological diseases are generally not dangerous, but they are very unpleasant and the treatment can be very lengthy. The infection is caused by dermatophytes of the genera: Microsporum, trichophyton, and epidermotyphon, but the culprits can be molds and yeasts.

The cause of this infection often depends on which of the skin is affected by a fungal infection, but what they all have in common is that the area is inflamed, itchy, red and can flake. Infection can also occur in hairy areas, often on the scalp and then start forming round or oval red spots. Fungal nail infections are most often seen on the toes. The first visible changes are related to the color of the nails which becomes yellowish or brownish. Later it becomes thicker, changes shape and begins to break and in the end it is completely separated. Strong odor often accompanies this process.

Long-term wearing of closed shoes and socks, poor hygiene of the feet, wet places like spas and swimming pools, an injury that enables infection, inadequate disinfection and cleaning in a nail salon are some of the causes of fungal infections of the feet. People suffering from decreased immunity (like diabetes for example), older people with problems in blood circulation, athletes and people who are generally exposed to greater loads on their legs and feet should be especially careful.
